Hemorrhoids are clusters of veins in and around the anal canal. These veins can become swollen causing irritation such as itching, burning or bleeding. Sometimes they suddenly become thrombosed (blocked with blood clot) causing severe pain.

The first line of treatment for hemorrhoids is usually a combination of dietary and lifestyle changes. Hemorrhoidectomy is only used for the treatment of internal hemorrhoids that have not responded to conservative treatment measures.

There are two forms of surgery for hemorrhoid removal:

TRADITIONAL HEMORRHOIDECTOMY - incisions are made in the tissue around the hemorrhoid. The swollen vein inside the hemorrhoid is tied off to prevent bleeding, and the hemorrhoid is removed. The surgical area may be sewn closed or left open.

STAPLED HEMORRHOIDOPEXY - during this procedure no incision is made. Instead, the hemorrhoid is placed in position and fastened with surgical staples.
